who bring glad tidings of good things!" - Romans 10:15
NEWS & EVENTS
A gentle story of giving and receiving, of truly seeing and being seen, Theo of Golden invites us into the sacred beauty of generosity, the grace of connection, and the quiet miracles that unfold when we choose kindness and live with wonder. You are warmly invited to gather with Kyle in the chapel on Sunday mornings in May at 9:15 am, where we will share in conversation, reflection, and spiritual discovery—listening together for how this moving novel might open our hearts and guide us toward more Christlike living within our community.
In 2018, following her first colonoscopy, Amy Lee Copland received a diagnosis of colon cancer. Because it was detected early, she underwent surgery and was soon given a clean bill of health. She often reflects on that brief but profound 32-day period as a turning point—one that reshaped her outlook on life in lasting ways. As she describes it, the experience was something of a “factory reset.” It prompted her to release what no longer mattered and to redefine her expectations, setting her measure of happiness in the simplest, most meaningful places. Since then, life itself has become a daily celebration. She embraces each moment fully—never missing an opportunity to enjoy a slice of cake, sing out loud, laugh at her own jokes, dance a little, or wear something bright and joyful. During that same season, she discovered a love for painting. After taking a few lessons, she found herself especially drawn to the idea of painting as an exploration of color. As she often says, her favorite color is simply “yes.” Now, nearly every morning, she can be found painting on her daughter’s old easel in the living room—capturing what is familiar, beautiful, and vibrant. She paints not only because she can, but because she is deeply grateful to be here. Amy Lee Copland invites the congregation to share in that spirit of joy and gratitude through her artwork. It will be on display in the gallery area below the sanctuary throughout May, with a special 90 minute reception on Thursday, May 7th from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm to speak with Amy Lee Copland about her incredible creations.
The world can feel especially heavy right now, and for many of us, joy may seem just out of reach. Yet our faith gently reminds us that joy is not something we must chase—it is a gift, a fruit of the Spirit already alive within us. Even in seasons of struggle, hardship, and uncertainty, joy can still take root and grow. How might we open ourselves to that joy, even now? You’re warmly invited to join us for a six-week journey of reflection and discovery as we explore Joyful Anyway by Duke University professor and cancer survivor Kate Bowler. Together, we’ll seek to uncover what it means to cultivate a deep, sustaining joy—even in life’s most unexpected and challenging moments. Come as you are, and let’s walk this path together. This book study will take place Wednesdays from May 13th through June 24th at 5:00 pm in Lewis Hall. To register, please connect with the church office or Amber Jones.
Following worship on Sunday, May 17th, the congregation is invited to the monthly Lunch and Learn. Michael Traynor, Chief Executive Officer of Union Mission, will be the guest speaker, sharing insights on the recent merger of Union Mission and Emmaus House and ways to engage in serving neighbors in Savannah. Union Mission partners with individuals to end homelessness, while Emmaus House provides meals, laundry, and restroom services in downtown Savannah Monday through Friday. A meal will be provided for $15 per person.
The congregation is invited to gather on Wednesday, May 20th at 5:30 pm for this month’s Wednesday Fellowship and Meal. During this important season of transition, Kyle Reese will lead a thoughtful conversation about the future of the church and the direction it is heading. The evening will begin with a shared meal, the cost of which is $15 per person. While staff transitions are often painful and rarely easy, they offer a time to re-dream and re-frame our direction and mission. Join us in Lewis Hall for a delicious meal and thoughtful conversation as we dream of our shared future as a congregation.
Pastoral care appointments will be available on May 5th from 4:00 to 5:00 pm, May 20th from 2:00 to 3:00 pm, and May 28th from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Please contact the church office or Amber Jones to schedule a convenient time.
Pentecost, celebrated this year on Sunday, May 24th, commemorates the day the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles, empowering them to share the message of Christ. Often recognized as the “birthday” of the Church, this significant moment in the life of faith will be observed with a special invitation for the congregation to wear red to worship. The color red symbolizes the fire of the Holy Spirit and the boldness it inspires, serving as a vibrant reminder of the Spirit’s presence and work in our lives today.
During the month of May, First Baptist Church’s mission focus will be The Living Vine. Founded in 1996, The Living Vine is the only licensed maternity home in the state of Georgia and serves women of all ages, races, and religions. It provides housing and comprehensive programming for homeless pregnant women and their babies. The Living Vine offers spiritual growth, education, life skills, medical and pre/post-natal care, workforce training, and counseling. Mothers may remain in the program for up to two years, allowing time to build stability for a brighter. More information, including upcoming dates and opportunities to engage, will be shared in the coming weeks. The church looks forward to partnering with The Living Vine.
The church extends a sincere thank you to Tracy Bailey for his dedication in overseeing the parking lot project. Beginning in June, we will be introducing a new childcare reservation system designed to help us provide safe, attentive, and high-quality care for our youngest members each Sunday. This new process will also help our volunteers and staff prepare thoughtfully and ensure that each child is welcomed well. To help us plan ahead, we kindly ask that you reserve your child’s spot prior to each Sunday service by clicking HERE. We are grateful for your partnership and look forward to welcoming your little ones during worship each week.
