Advent 2016

The Angel Gabriel

Yes sir, yes sir.  I understand.  I think I've got all the information I need.  You want me to visit the priest Zechariah and give him the happy news that he and his wife Elizabeth will be having a little boy named John.  That should be easy.  I love giving good news to people.  Oh - really?  Don't they want a child?  Then what's the problem?  I'm very believable.  I'm sure that I could never scare anyone.  I'm an angel, after all.  You can count on me...

Yes, this is Gabriel.  You want me to do what?  Wait, the last time you sent me to give people happy news it didn't go so well!  Zechariah was scared to death and didn't believe me!  And then you know what happened next.  Ugh.  Okay, give me the skinny on this person.  Nazareth - in Galilee?  That's the jumping off place to nowhere.  A teenage girl - ooh they can be so difficult and - oh, oh no husband, but there is a fiancĂ©e.  Oh boy.  Anything else?  Well, I'm getting chill bumps just hearing all this.  Even though it is fantastically, wonderfully amazing news I can see how a young maiden could be totally traumatized by it.  I'm going to have to be very calm and reassuring when I talk to Mary.  I hope this works out for Mary and her betrothed, well for everyone - the whole world...

Mary, Mary.  Oh please don't be afraid.  Peace be with you.  God has greatly blessed you and been gracious to you.  You will become pregnant and give birth to a son named Jesus.  He will be great and will be called the son of the Most High.  The Lord will make him a king like his ancestor David.  His kingdom will never end.  Yes I know that you have never known a man, but the Holy Spirit will come over you and God's power will rest upon you.  This holy child will be called the Son of God.  Your elderly cousin Elizabeth is going to have a child.  Yes, it is amazing, isn't it?  But there is nothing that God cannot do...

God, Mary received your news with joy.  She is praising your name, and says that she is your humble and faithful servant and is waiting for what will happen to her as you have promised.  Well, you have taken care of everything as usual.  You have blessed the world beyond measure with the promised birth of a Savior.  Everything will be okay.  Alleluia, Alleluia!
