Advent 2015

"God Be in My Head"

God is the one who saves me; I will trust in God and not be afraid.  The Lord, the Lord gives me strength and makes me sing.  He has saved me (Isaiah 12:2 ncv).

At those times when my questions seem stronger than the answers I find, and my vision of God at work is nearly absent, it has become redemptive for me to listen to the music of John Rutter.  One piece that has been enormously powerful for me is his setting to music an ancient prayer from the Sarum Primer, written in the eleventh century, and preceded The Book of Common Prayer in English worship until 1549.  God Be in My Head  has becomes my Advent prayer.

God be in my head, and in my understanding.

God be in mine eyes, and in my looking.

God be in my mouth, and in my speaking.

God be in mine heart, and in my thinking.

God be at mine end, and in my departing.

Amen.
