Advent 2015

"With Joy"

In the opening chapter of Scott Cairns' narrative, Short Trip to the Edge:  Where Earth Meets Heaven - A Pilgrimage, the reader is met with images of the Aegean Sea and the beginning of Cairns' deeply intimate pilgrimage to Mount Athos.  Cairns devotes several pages describing his struggle with prayer in his current stage of life.  Cairns states, "At the age of forty, I had accomplished only this:  I saw how far I had gotten off track."

During the season of Advent I find myself reflecting on my personal Christian journey and how I have brought joy to others and glory to God.  In some of those reflections I find that I've fallen short or gotten off track.  My biggest way to combat those feelings of personal shortcomings is bringing joy to those around me.  On my office door, I have a sign that reads, "Be a blessing to someone today."  It reminds me each day to be kind, gentle, and humble in all that I do and say.

Isaiah 12:3 resonates many of these same sentiments to me:  "With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation."  Sharing joy with others is how I find myself conveying God's love and vision.  I urge you to be a blessing to someone today, to share God's joy with a stranger, and convey the grace of God to those around you.  For if there is one truth to the human drama it is that we are all in need of God's grace, especially in those times where we feel as though we've gotten off track.
