***Responding to Haiti***
Many of our members have asked how they might respond to the critical needs in Haiti resulting from the devastating earthquake which occurred earlier this week. Persons who desire to make a financial gift that will go immediately in support of this disaster are invited to consider the following organizations:
The American Red Cross is contributing an initial $1 million from its International Response Fund, and is sending supplies and additional staff in support of relief operations. In addition to staff already in the country, the Red Cross is deploying six disaster management specialists to the disaster zone. Donations may be made online at www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-733-2767.
Oxfam America is responding through its 200 staff members who are on-the-ground providing public health, clean water, and sanitation services in order to prevent the spread of disease. Online donations may be made at www.oxfamamerica.org.
In addition, the following Baptist organizations will be sending humanitarian aid as soon as possible:
Baptist World Aid (BWAid), the relief and development arm of the Baptist World Alliance, is coordinating Baptist response and relief efforts in Haiti. BWAid has made an initial pledge of $20,000 to be distributed equally through two BWA member bodies, the Baptist Convention of Haiti and the Haiti Baptist Mission. Donations are being accepted through the BWA website, www.bwanet.org.
Cooperative Baptist Fellowship field personnel, Nancy and Steve James, are assigned to Haiti in cooperation with American Baptist Churches in the USA. CBF will channel funds through the Jameses and other mission partners. While not a first-responder in such disasters, CBF will focus its efforts on making a long-term impact on the affected region. Online contributions may be made by visiting the CBF website at www.thefellowship.info.
