A DAY OF CHRISTMAS MUSIC

The Third Sunday of Advent, December 14,
will be a full day of seasonal music. During morning
worship we will hear from the Adult Choir, the Youth
Choir, the Children’s Choir, and the Handbell Choir.
Following a churchwide luncheon (moved from the
usual Third Sunday of the month to the second) the
Adult Choir will present its Christmas concert,
entitled “Joy through the Centuries.” Six anthems,
ranging from the 16th through the 20th centuries, will
be presented in chronological order, with some brief
commentary pointing out how Joy has been expressed
by various composers during different historical
periods.
Beginning with “Gaudete,” both words and
music of which date from the 16th century,
progressing through selections by Bach, Handel, and
Rheinberger, and advancing to John Rutter’s lively
setting of “Joy to the World,” the unifying theme of
Joy will be evident throughout the program.
Concluding the concert will be Percy Fletcher’s
setting of “Ring Out, Wild Bells,” employing the
theme of this year’s Advent devotional booklet.
Please plan to stay for lunch this Sunday, then enjoy
the concert, and join us for caroling later in the
afternoon.
