Abraham

Book Reviews

abrahamFeiler, Bruce. ABRAHAM: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths. (NEW YORK: Harper Collins Publishers, Inc., 2002)

Bruce Feiler, a 37 year old Savannahian living in New York and the author of 5 other books, has traveled and studied extensively in the Holy Land.

The book Abraham was begun soon after the collapse of the Twin Towers in New York on September 11, 2001. The first chapter titled "Rock of Abraham" finds Feiler in Jerusalem beginning a personal quest to understand our common patriarch . His conversational style of writing takes the reader on a journey from the "Birth and Call of Abraham"; "Children, Ishmael and Isaac"; and the "Peoples of Abraham; Jews, Christians and Muslims". In the final chapter, "Blood of Abraham", we accompany the author on a journey to the patriarch's burial place in Hebron.

I was shocked by how little I know of how intertwined the three religions are; especially the Muslims historical overlapping with the Jewish and Christian faiths. Hopefully, it will redefine what we think about our neighbors and pray this knowledge will help us as Christians to be better witnesses for Christ.
