Advent 2011

"The Word Became Flesh" - I have really struggled with this concept.  I understand the verse, but what exactly do I write about?  What do I have to say?  What is my point of view?

A few years ago there was a popular song by Joan Osborne, in which the question was asked, What If God Was One of Us?  One verse of the song reads:

If God had a face what would it look like?

And would you want to see

If seeing meant that you would have to believe

In things like heaven and in Jesus and the saints and all the prophets?

Taken literally, What If God Was One of Us?  At this place and in this time?  What would be the reaction to Jesus today?  In his day and time, the reactions to Jesus were varied:  at times he was accepted and followed by large numbers, but he was also crucified by the "powers that be" and denied by his friends.

Sadly, I think that the reactions would not be much different today.  Would Jesus have to resort to Facebook and Twitter to get his message out and to let people know that he was here?  Would we believe him?  Would we follow him?

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.  He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.  He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him (John 1:9-11).

Wouldn't we all like to think that if Jesus were to come to earth tomorrow, we would all celebrate him and welcome him?  But would we?  I am sure that there would be those who would be there to bow down before him as did the wise men but there would also be those who would scoff and ask for proof.
