Advent 2011

The late comedian Brother Dave Gardner used to tell a story about a motorcycle rider named Chuck and his girlfriend Baby.  In the story, Chuck bragged that he knew what was in every book in every library in the world.  When Baby asked what that was, Chuck replied that it was words.  Baby thought that Chuck was wise.  But it was clear to Brother Dave's listeners that Chuck didn't know the words in the books in the libraries, and he didn't know what they meant.

Through the ages, God gave his people words to tell them how to live.  But most of them, most of the time, did not live according to his word.  Maybe they just didn't want to.  But maybe it was because they didn't know the words or they simply didn't understand the words.

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the Word was made flesh.  As Jesus lived and died, he showed us how God intended for us to live.  He fed the hungry.  He healed the sick.  He forgave others.  He lived unselfishly.  But mostly he loved God and fellow man.

The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.  Even if we don't always understand the words, we can look to the example Jesus set for us.  Jesus showed us how to live the way God intended.
