2011 Committee Descriptions

About Us

The congregation of First Baptist Church approved the suspension of the portion of the church's Bylaws which are applicable to the church's committee structure. The purpose of the suspension is to allow the Nominating Committee to review, revise, and test proposed changes to the structure during 2011.

The Nominating Committee is proposing that the current committees be restructured to fall into two categories: Committees and Task Forces.

Committees will be provided for in the church Bylaws and will cover those functions which involve policy and decision-making authority. Committees will include:

Budget and Finance
Children and Youth
Missions
Music and Arts
Nominating
Personnel
Spiritual Formation (formerly Christian Education)
Stewardship
Worship

Task Forces will cover duties and tasks necessary in the life of the church but that do not affect church policy. The Nominating Committee will still nominate the chairs for Task Forces but Task Forces will be responsible for recruiting their own members and will not be limited in the number of members or time lengths of service. Participants may be added at any time but annual organization of these task forces will take place in the fall of the year, as soon as possible after the Nominating Committee has secured the persons who will constitute the chairs of the Task Forces. Their service would begin January 1 of the following year. Task Forces will include (but are not necessarily limited to):

Altar Guild (formerly Paraments)
Audio
Fellowship (includes current Hospitality)
Greeters
History
Member Care (formerly Pastoral Care)
Ordinances (Lord's Supper and Baptism)
Outreach and Public Relations
Property Maintenance
Sanctuary (formerly Worship)
Ushers
Wedding


It is further proposed that vice chairs for both Committees and Task Forces be selected by the groups from within their membership early in the year of service. This should be done with the understanding that selection as vice chair does not necessarily mean nomination as chair the following year.

The Nominating Committee will be presenting a slate of Committee members and chairs as well as Task Force chairs at the October quarterly church conference. The Committee Descriptions are provided here for a guide but are by no means complete or finalized.
