Who We Are

The First Baptist Church confesses Jesus Christ as Lord, on the basis of who he was and is, and what he did and does. Who is he? We confess him to be God's unique Son, the Messiah of Israel, the Lord of Life. What did he do? He gave his live even unto death--by God's will and for our sake--on the cross. He comes again and again by the Holy Spirit, to communicate himself to his people. His people are the Church.

We seek simply to be one visible congregation of Christ's Church. We hold Baptist views about the Christian faith. However, we also rejoice in our Lord's gracious gifts to our fellow believers, who are called by names other than Baptist. Happily, we count them as our brothers and our sisters.

We live out our discipleship by taking seriously our commitment to each other and to the world. We share not only our words, but our money, our time, and our talents, with our friends here, and with all God's people everywhere.

While rich in history, First Baptist Church is not content to rest on its laurels. Today, we relate to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Georgia, and the Baptist World Alliance. Social ministries and ecumenical ventures are vital emphases in this congregation. We participate in local ministries through organizations such as the American Red Cross, My Brothaz House, Congregations in Service, Greenbriar Children's Home, Habitat for Humanity, Morningstar Children and Family Services, Savannah Baptist Center, Second Harvest Food Bank, Union Mission, Inc., and United Ministries of Savannah. Since November, 1995, we have sponsored nineteen mission trips to Cuba in partnership with the Fraternity of Baptist Churches of Cuba and our current sister congregation, the Genesaret Baptist Church in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba.

Worship is a central part of who we are at First Baptist Church. Our worship is enriched deeply by the long tradition of a distinguished music program.

Through worship, music and educational programs we strive to provide a balanced ministry to all persons. Working together, ministers and laity, we are committed to advancing the work of Christ in Savannah and also to the ends of the earth.

Consider being a part of us. Visitors are always welcome.
